A steady 18 mile cycle ride on disused railways and relatively quiet roads to the west of Durham City
This ride starts from Broompark Picnic Area where 3 disused railway lines meet (Bishop to Brandon Line, Deerness Valley line, Lanchester Valley line. This 18 mile ride heads north west along the Lanchester Valley line. The surface is hard but not tarmac and suitable for MTB, hybrid and touring bikes. The only cafe on route is at Aldin Grange fishing lakes, shortly after leaving Broompark. There are shops in Langley Park and Esh Winning (slightly off route)
Leave Broompark by turning left along the disused railway line on the Lanchester Valley route and follow the line to Langley Park. When you reach the main road at Langley Park, turn left along the main road and follow it as it turns left then right in the village.
After passing through the village the route climbs gently to a T junction where you turn right to pass through the village of Quebec.
Turn left at the fork at the top end of the village then turn left at the crossroads to descend through Cornsay Colliery.
Pass through Cornsay Colliery then climb the hill past Rowley Farm then take the first turn left signposted for Ivesley Equestrian Centre. The road climbs a little before descending to Waterhouses.
At Waterhouses, turn left to join the disused Deerness Valley railway and follow this back to Broompark
